UPSC Civil Service (IAS) Exam 2016 Notification Released, Apply at upsconline.nic.in till 27 May and Syllabus

Union Public Service Commission has released the official notification of Civil Services Exam 2016 commonly shouted as IAS exam. This year vacancy has been called for 1079 posts under various departments. The eligible candidates may apply till 27th May 2016. Preliminary of the examination is scheduled to be held on 7th August 2016.


The number of vacancies to be filled on the result of the examination is expected to be approximately 1079 which include 34 vacancies reserved for P.H. Category, i.e. 14 vacancies for LDCP, 7 Vacancies for B/LV and 13 Vacancies for H.I.

Eligibility for the exam

Educational Qualification: The candidate must hold a degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.
Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications which are recognised by the Government as equivalent to professional and technical degree would also be eligible for admission to the examination.

Number of Attempts:

• For General Candidates: Maximum 6 chances
• For OBC: Maximum 9 chances
• For SC/ST: Unlimited chances
• For Physically handicapped: Unlimited chances
• For General Physically handicapped: Maximum 9 chances

Age Limit:

A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August, 2016 i.e., he must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1984 and not later than 1st August, 1995. Necessary action to make corresponding changes in respective Rules/Regulations pertaining to various services is being taken separately.
Age relaxation applicable: 
→ upto 5 years relaxation for SC/ST
→ upto 3 years relaxation for OBC
→ upto 5 years relaxation for  candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu and Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989
→ up to a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services Personnel, disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence
→ up to a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2016
→ up to a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2016.

Selection Procedure

The Civil Services Examination will consist of two successive stages 
(i) Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination; and 
(ii) Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various Services and posts noted above. Applications are now invited for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination only. 
Candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified for admission to the Civil Services (Main) Examination will have to apply online again, in the Detailed Application Form which would be made available to them. The Main Examination is likely to be held in December, 2016. 

Application Fee

Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST/PH Candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) either by remitting the money in any Branch of SBI by Cash, or by using net banking facility of State Bank of India/ State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/Sate Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/ State Bank of Patiala /State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card. 

How To Apply

Candidates are required to apply online using the website http://www.upsconline.nic.in. The applicants are advised to submit only single application, however, if due to any unavoidable situation, if he/she submits another/multiple applications, then he/she must ensure that application with the higher RID is complete in all respects like applicants’ details, examination centre, photograph, signature, fee etc.
